Sticky and Sweet.

For some reason the last few days, I have been thinking it was time to fire up the ol' FLIPPNYC blog again. Maybe it is Facebook Fatigue.

Ah, Facebook. I feel like I closed down this blog in part because of the glittery ball of shiny things that is Facebook. Like a kid eating cotton candy, the first few months on Facebook are a high-like thrill. Like cotton candy, however, the cool things about Facebook can quickly become the same things that make you feel kind of sick at your stomach.

Old friends find you, and suddenly you get a peek into the lives of people whom, three months ago, you didn't even think about. At first, reading the updates, you think "Wow, Steve is doing his laundry!" After a while, though, you start to realize that, even if you like Steve, why should you care? The same thing happens with those crazy Facebook applications. I mean, really, how many virtual shots or electronic pieces of flair does one person need?

I am a big believer in personal energy. Where you focus your energy is where you get your results. With Facebook, I too often found myself focusing my energy on people, memories, and events from the past. Some of that is good, some of it bad, and some of it is neutral. But, it sucked up my energy and time, even in the form of a few clicks and a few seconds, and for some reason, I started to feel like I had eaten too much cotton candy.

Plus, I got really really tired of those little ads on Facebook for my own personal stimulus check. I give Facebook about another two years before we collectively have bellyaches.

Most importantly, though, is the reality that my New York experience hasn't stopped quiet so neatly at Year 1 (see the previous post). New York continues to dole out some amazing experiences and observations that I want to record for myself, even if no one else reads this blog.

So, start checking back from time to time. Undoubtedly, this blog could be your own form of cotton candy. I promise to try not to make it too sickenly sweet on New York.

But, golly, I do love New York.
