I discovered one of those unexpected, yet expected, aspects of New York this week.
It's still a small world.
On Saturday at my friend's birthday party, I was talking to a guy who, as it turns out, is from Birmingham, where my brother and his family live. It turns out he not only grew up on their street (before they moved there) but that he has spent time with them.
Then, last night, a friend from Atlanta took me to a America's Next Top Model watching party at one of his friend's apartment. It was a party where the guest of honor was one of the judges on the show (a guest judge, she is editor in chief of Seventeen Magazine). She not only knew a friend of mine who worked for Tyra Banks (not a surprise), but she was best friends with one of my good friends from college. I turn to talk to the girl sitting next to her, and it turns out we worked together when I worked at P&G out of college.
Small world in New York? More likely explanation, as a wise soul once told me years ago, it's a small socio-economic world.
On another topic, many of my co-workers are at the South by Southwest (SXSW) music festival in Austin. I am a bit jealous. But, thanks to the wonders of this thing called the internet, you can practically be there yourself. NPR is creating some great coverage. If you get a chance, listen to REM's performance yesterday (here). Took me back to college. In a really good way.
